Quick couplers (also called quick hitches) sit between the excavator arm and the attachment. They let the operator change attachments without driving the pins out by hand, which saves time on sites where one machine uses several tools.

Types of quick couplers:

Mechanical: opened and locked by hand with a lever or spindle (simple, light, no hydraulic lines)
Semi-automatic: opened by hand, locks automatically when the attachment is picked up
Hydraulic: opened and locked from the cab through a hydraulic circuit
Tilt-Rotator: Full 360° rotation plus ±45° tilt (maximum versatility)

Safety standards: ISO 13031 covers quick coupler safety. Locking features found on couplers include:

Front lock mechanism (prevents drop if rear pins fail)
Safety springs (maintain lock if hydraulic pressure lost)
Visual indicator (confirms locked status from cab)
Connection test procedure (verify engagement before lifting)
