Excavator size category based on operating weight. Used for initial sizing and preselection of an attachment; interface fit (pins, stick width, coupler) is verified separately.
Weight class categorizes excavators by their operating weight (including tracks, counterweight, and fuel). It is a first filter for attachment size, not a fitment check: the interface (pins, stick width, coupler) is verified separately for each machine.
Standard weight classes:
- Mini (1–6 t): Compact excavators for tight spaces
- Midi (6–12 t): Versatile mid-size machines
- Standard (12–30 t): General construction workhorses
- Heavy (30 t+): Quarry, mining, heavy demolition
Why weight class matters:
- Determines hydraulic flow available
- Sets maximum attachment weight
- Affects working envelope and reach
Weight class does not tell you the pin spacing or pin diameter. Those vary by machine and are checked separately.
Matching rules:
- Attachment weight typically 15-25% of carrier weight
- Hydraulic requirements must match carrier capability
- Pin configuration must match or use adapter
